Work
A loafer! The very worst name that can be applied to a young man.
And it is the most inexcusable thing in the world, too.
You must work in this world if you expect to keep up with the procession.
Whether you handle a pick or hoe, clerk or book-keeper, farm or merchandise,
digging ditches or editing a paper, and so on into every vocation of life, you must work.
Look around you and you will see what has been accomplished by those
who have worked and are still working. You will find that the men who are
best able to live the rest of their lives without work are the ones that have
worked the hardest
Don't be afraid of killing yourself with work. It is beyond your power to do that.
Men cannot work so hard as that on the sunny side of thirty. They die sometimes,
but it is because they quit work at 6 p. m. and, don't go home until 2 a. m. Its
the interval that kills. Work gives an appetite for meals; it lends solidity to
your slumbers; it gives the appreciation of a holiday.
There are young men that do not work, but the world is not proud of them.
It does not even know their names; it simply speaks of them as old So and So's
boys. Nobody hates them; the great, busy world doesn't even know that they
are here. So find out what to be and do, take off your coat and make a dust in
the world.
The busier you are the less deviltry you will be apt to get into, the sweeter
will be your sleep, the brighter and happier your holidays and the better satisfied
will the world be with you.
The Way to Wealth
by
Benjamin Franklin
Sloth like rust, consumes faster than labor wears, while the used key is always bright. If you love life, do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of,
If time be of all things the most precious, wasting time must be the greatest prodigality, since lost time is never found again, and what we call time enough always proves little enough. Let us then be up and doing, and doing to the purpose. For by diligence we shall do more with less perplexity. Sloth makes all things difficult, but industry all easy, and he that rises late, must trot all day, and shall scarce overtake his business at night. While laziness travels slowly, poverty soon overtakes him. Drive thy business, do not let it drive thee. Early to bed, and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.
So what signifies wishing and hoping for better times? We may make these times better, if we bestir ourselves. Industry need not wish, and he that lives upon hope will die fasting. There are no gains without pains. Work with your hands, unless you have great lands. He that has a trade, has an estate, and he that has a calling, has an office of profit and honor, but the trade must be worked at, and the calling well followed, or neither the estate nor the office will pay.
If we are industrious we shall never starve, because at the working mans house, hunger looks in, but dares not enter. Nor will the bailiff or the constable enter, because industry pays debts, while despair increases them. What ! You have found no treasure, nor has any rich relation left you a legacy, "Diligence is the mother of good luck, and God gives all things to industry. Then plow deep while sluggards sleep, and you shall have corn to harvest and keep."
Work, while it is called for today, for you know not how much you may be hindered tomorrow. "One today is worth two tomorrows, and further, never leave that till tomorrow, which you can do today." If you were a servant, you would be ashamed that a good master should catch you idle. Are you then not your own master? Be ashamed to catch yourself idle, when there is so much to be done for yourself, your family, and your country.
Handle your tools without mittens, remember that "The cat in gloves catches no mice." It is true, there is much to be done, and perhaps, you are weak handed, but stick to it steadily, and you will see great effects. Constant dripping of water wears away stones, and by diligence and patience the mouse ate in two the cable, and little strokes fell great oaks.
Methinks I hear some say, "Must a man afford himself no leisure?" I will tell thee, my friend. Employ thy time well, if thou mean to gain leisure, and since thou are not sure of a minute, throw not away an hour. Leisure is time for doing "something useful", this leisure, the diligent man will obtain, but the lazy man never. A life of leisure, and a life of laziness are two things. Many, without labor, would live by their wits only, but they are at a loss for the want of necessities. Whereas industry gives comfort, and plenty, and respect. Fly away from pleasures and they will follow you. The diligent spinner has many who want what is produced.. Now that my own needs are met, others greet me well. With our industry we must likewise be steady, settled, and careful, and oversee our own affairs with our own eyes, and not trust too much to others." I never saw an oft removed tree, Nor yet, an oft removed family, That thrived so well as those that are settled." Constant relocation is like a constant disaster. " Keep thy shop, and thy shop will keep thee." If you would have your business done, go yourself, if not send another. He that plows would thrive, not if he pulls the plow, but drives.
Thank God every morning when you get up, that you have something to do that day which must be done. Being motivated to work, and inspired to do your best will breed in you temperance and self-control, diligence and strength of will, cheerfulness and content, and a hundred virtues which the idle never know.
Charles Kingsley
Labor, one's job, is much more than just pay for living. Properly viewed it is chief among the pleasures of life. So viewed, it buys for us a constantly increasing volume of the tangible things which contribute to our comfort, as well as adding to our store of the wealth which money cannot buy. In what coin shall we measure the exquisite sensation of pure weariness, when that weariness has come from continued application to the task we know well? We all revel in excitement. The idler, who does not labor for his living, knows nothing of the joy and excitement of action, nor the feeling of exultation which accompanies the intensity of concentration.
To see a job well done, to enjoy the contemplation of the finished work, or to note the progress made from hour to hour and day by day --- these are happiness we cannot know without working.
We workers get large pay in the form of pride which comes with the knowledge that we are contributing to the well being of our dependents, and the satisfaction of adding to the general welfare.
There is a big dividend of pleasure in developing skill and speed in doing the things which are ours to do. Contentment is one of the greatest returns received by the worker. The contented worker can always find something to interest him in his work, for his contentment grows from the knowledge that he is doing his share of the world's work, and making the world a better place to live --- for himself, his loved ones, and those who come after him.

An Every-Day Creed
I believe in my job. it may not be a very important job, but it is mine. furthermore it is Gods job for me. He has a purpose in my life with reference to his plan for the world's progress. No other fellow can take my place. It isn't a big place, to be sure, but for years I have been molded in a particular way to fill a particular niche in the world's work. I could take no other man's place. He has the same claim as a specialist that I make for myself. In the end the man whose name was never heard beyond the house in which he lived, or the shop in which he worked, may have a larger place than the chap whose name has been a household word in two continents. Yes, I believe in my job. May I be kept true to the task which lies before me ----
true to myself and to God who entrusted me with it.

and let not your hands be weak;
for your work shall be rewarded.

Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord;
that walketh in his ways.
For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands:
happy shalt thou be, and it
shall be well with thee.

and then he shall have rejoicing in
himself alone, and not in another.

But whoso looketh into the
perfect law of liberty, and
continueth therein, he being
not a forgetful hearer, but
a doer of the work, this man

Enthusiasm
Enthusiasm is the greatest business asset in the world.
It beats money and power and influence. Single handed
the enthusiast convinces and dominates where a small
army of workers would scarcely raise a tremor of interest.
Enthusiasm tramples over prejudice and opposition,
spurns inaction, storms the citadel of its object, and
like an avalanche overwhelms and engulfs all obstacles.
Enthusiasm is faith in action; and faith and initiative
rightly combined remove mountainous barriers and
achieve the unheard of and miraculous. Set the germ
of enthusiasm afloat in your business; carry it in your
attitude and manner; it spreads like a contagion and
influences every fiber of your industry; it begets and
inspires effects you did not dream of; it means increase
in production and decrease in costs; it means joy and
pleasure and satisfaction to your workers; it means life
real and virile; it means spontaneous bedrock results -
the vital things that pay dividends.
Electrocraft ( Heart Throbs Vol. 2 )
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not, nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not, unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not, the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent. The slogan " press on " has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. .... The most common commodity in this country is unrealized potential.

Make all you can
Save all you can
Give all you can
"John Wesley"
it is the bounden duty of all who are engaged in worldly business to observe that first and great rule of Christian wisdom with respect to money, "Gain all you can." Gain all you can by honest industry. Use all possible diligence in your calling. Lose no time. If you understand yourself and your relation to God and man, you know you have none to spare. If you understand your particular calling as you ought, you will have no time that hangs upon your hands. Every business will afford some employment sufficient for every day and every hour. That wherein you are placed, if you follow it in earnest, will leave you no leisure for silly, unprofitable diversions. You have always something better to do, something that will profit you, more or less. And "whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might." Do it as soon as possible: No delay! No putting off from day to day, or from hour to hour! Never leave anything till to-morrow, which you can do to-day. And do it as well as possible. Do not sleep or yawn over it: Put your whole strength to the work. Spare no pains. Let nothing be done by halves, or in a slight and careless manner. Let nothing in your business be left undone if it can be done by labour or patience.
Gain all you can, by common sense, by using in your business all the understanding which God has given you. It is amazing to observe, how few do this; how men run on in the same dull track with their forefathers. But whatever they do who know not God, this is no rule for you. It is a shame for a Christian not to improve upon them, in whatever he takes in hand. You should be continually learning, from the experience of others, or from your own experience, reading, and reflection, to do everything you have to do better to-day than you did yesterday. And see that you practise whatever you learn, that you may make the best of all that is in your hands. John Wesley
Prosperity
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You cannot build character and courage by destroying men's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
Rev. Wm. J. H. Boetcker
Perseverance
It's not enough to plan; it's necessary to persevere.
Trying once will not do; you've got to try and try again.
Success depends on staying power. The lack of
perseverance is the reason most people fail in attaining
their goals. Persistence is the gold mine of success.
Success doesn't always come to the genius.
Happiness is not guaranteed to the most clever.
Wealth rarely stems from an unexpected windfall.
Hard work, careful planning, and perseverance,
these are the characteristics that will prevail.
Preparation and Opportunity = Success
Responsibility liberates us as individuals. It means making the best of what we have, our minds, talents, skills and
developed abilities. Taking responsibility gives us the power to control the direction and outcome of our working lives.
There is not a successful, happy individual who does not
have enthusiasm. It is an ingredient absolutely
necessary to accomplishing any endeavor competently
and efficiently. Enthusiasm lightens daily work. It's
amazing how quickly and effortlessly a task is
accomplished when done with enthusiasm. The beauty of
enthusiasm is that it is within every one of us, just as
God's spirit is in each of us. Enthusiasm is not dependent
on talent or genius or upbringing. In fact, it is enthusiasm
that frequently transforms average abilities into
extraordinary success. it's that winning spirit that
overcomes genetic handicaps and environmental ghettos.

“Success” By Berton Braley
” Success”
If you want a thing bad enough
To go out and fight for it,
Work day and night for it,
Give up your time and your peace and your sleep for it
If only desire of it
Makes you quite mad enough
Never to tire of it,
Makes you hold all other things tawdry and cheap for it
If life seems all empty and useless without it
And all that you scheme and you dream is about it,
If gladly you’ll sweat for it,
Fret for it,
Plan for it,
Lose all your terror of the opposition for it,
If you’ll simply go after that thing that you want.
With all your capacity,
Strength and sagacity,
Faith, hope and confidence, stern pertinacity,
If neither cold poverty, famished and gaunt,
Nor sickness nor pain
Of body or brain
Can turn you away from the thing that you want,
If dogged and grim you besiege and beset it,
With the help of God you will surely get it!

Opportunity
by Berton Braley
With doubt and dismay you are smitten
You think there's no chance for you, son?
Why, the best books haven't been written
The best race hasn't been run,
The best score hasn't been made yet,
The best song hasn't been sung,
The best tune hasn't been played yet,
Cheer up, for the world is young!
No chance? Why the world is just eager
For things that you ought to create.
Its store of true wealth is still meager
Its needs are incessant and great,
It yearns for more power and beauty
More laughter and love and romance,
More loyalty, labor and duty,
No chance--why there's nothing but chance!
For the best verse hasn't been rhymed yet,
The best house hasn't been planned,
The highest peak hasn't been climbed yet,
The mightiest rivers aren't spanned,
Don't worry and fret, faint hearted,
The chances have just begun,
For the Best jobs haven't been started,
The Best work hasn't been done.
Labor / Thomas Carlyle
For there is a perennial nobleness, and even sacredness, in Work.
Were he never so benighted, forgetful of his high calling, there
is always hope in a man that actually and earnestly works: in
Idleness alone is there perpetual despair...
know what thou canst work at; and work
at it, like a Hercules! That will be thy better plan.
It has been written, 'an endless significance lies in Work. a man perfects himself by working...
Consider how, even in the meanest sorts of
Labor, the whole soul of a man is composed into a kind of real harmony, the instant he sets himself to work!...
Blessed is he who has found his work; let him ask no other
blessedness. He has a work, a life-purpose; he has found it, and will follow it!... be great or
small! Labor is Life: from the inmost heart of the Worker
rises his god-given Force,.

Keep At Your Work
By HMS Richards, Sr.
“The Lord has given to every person this work. It is your business to do it and the
devil’s business to hinder you if he can. So surely as God has given you a work to do,
Satan will try to hinder you. He may present other things that appear more promising,
he may allure you by worldly prospects, he may assault you with slander, torment you
with false accusations, set you to work defending your character, employ pious
persons to lie about you, editors to assail you, and excellent men to slander you. You
may have Pilate and Herod, Annas and Caiaphas all combined against you, and Judas
standing by ready to sell you for thirty pieces of silver; and you may wonder why all
those things come upon you. Can you not see that the whole thing is brought about
through the craft of the devil to draw you off from your work and hinder your
obedience to God?
Keep about your work. Do not flinch because the lion roars; do not stop to stone the
devil’s dogs; do not fool away your time chasing the devil’s rabbits. Do your work. Let
liars lie, let sectarians quarrel, let corporations resolve, let editors publish, let the devil
do his worst; but see to it that nothing hinders you from fulfilling the work that God
has given you.
He has not sent you to make money. He has not commanded you to get rich. He has
never bidden you to defend your character. He has not set you at work to contradict
falsehood which Satan and his servants may start to peddle. If you do these things, you
will do nothing else; you will be at work for yourself and not for the Lord.
Keep about your work. Let your aim be as steady as a star. Let the world brawl and
bubble. You may be assaulted, wronged, insulted, slandered, wounded and rejected;
you may be abused by foes, forsaken by friends, and despised and rejected but see to it
with steadfast determination, with unfaltering zeal, that you pursue the great purpose
of your life and object of your being, until at last you can say, “I have finished the work
which Thou gavest me to do.”
